The teachings of Jesus Christ

Divorce

Matthew 5:31-32 (KJV)

5:31 It hath been said, Whosoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorcement:

5:32 But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery.

God wants marriage to be for life. If you take on a lifetime commitment, then you should honour it. If you get a divorce, then if your spouse or you gets married to somebody else, then they or you are committing adultery. That's because you are still married to somebody else - for life. Jesus says you can get a divorce if your spouse is fornicating. He doesn't say you must get a divorce for that. You might be able to forgive your spouse if they repent from fornication, and then you can stay married.
