The Teachings of Jesus Christ

Matthew 7:15-20 (KJV)

False Prophets

7:15 Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.

7:16 Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?

7:17 Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit.

7:18 A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.

7:19 Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.

7:20 Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.

Jesus tells us to beware: not everybody who claims to be teaching about God is doing so. We need to look at what the priorities of religious teachers are. If their main priority is teaching people about God, and their teachings don't contradict the Bible, they can be trusted. If their main priority is enriching themselves, and God hardly gets a mention, then they are false teachers. If all their messages can be boiled down to "Send me money", they are false teachers. If they live in a mansion and own a fleet of expensive cars, and show no concern about people who need help, they are false teachers. Compare the motivations of religious teachers with the teachings of Jesus in the Bible.

However, you must remember that religious teachers, priests, pastors and so on are human. They will make mistakes, and commit sins occasionally. Everybody makes a mistake every now and then. The difference is that a person following God will admit their mistake and correct it. A false prophet deliberately teaches false doctrine in order to make themselves rich. It's the false prophets that Jesus is warning us about.
