5:13 Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.
If you eat salty food, you know it's salty. Jesus wants Christians to be like salt, giving flavour to the world. If you just try to blend in with the world, going along with what everybody else says, then you are worthless as a Christian. You need to stand up and be counted as a Christian. You need to tell people about what Jesus has done for you. You need to lead others to God by showing them the benefits of Christian life.
5:14 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.
5:15 Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.
5:16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
Jesus wants Christians to be "the light of the world". Imagine a city on a hill, with its lights shining for all to see from a long way away. Be like that, so that other people can see what it's like to be one of God's children. Imagine lighting a candle, and then putting a basket over it. No light would get out, and the room would still be dark. Tell people about Jesus, tell them about God. Spread your light so that more people will turn away from sin and turn to God.
