9:9 And as Jesus passed forth from thence, he saw a man, named Matthew, sitting at the receipt of custom: and he saith unto him, Follow me. And he arose, and followed him.
9:10 And it came to pass, as Jesus sat at meat in the house, behold, many publicans and sinners came and sat down with him and his disciples.
9:11 And when the Pharisees saw it, they said unto his disciples, Why eateth your Master with publicans and sinners?
9:12 But when Jesus heard that, he said unto them, They that be whole need not a physician, but they that are sick.
9:13 But go ye and learn what that meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice: for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.
Matthew was a tax collector (also known as a publican). Jesus asked Matthew to follow him, and Matthew straight away started following Jesus. Will you be like Matthew and start following Jesus as soon as he calls you?
Jesus and Matthew went to Matthew's house to eat. Many other tax collectors and sinners arrived there to eat as well. In those days, tax collectors often charged people extra taxes and kept the money for themselves. That made people hate them.
The Pharisees tried to trap Jesus and bring him down by accusing him of doing something wrong by eating with tax collectors and sinners. Jesus answered their accusations by pointing out that he came to earth to save the sinners. Similarly, modern Christians shouldn't be afraid of being with sinners. In order to spread Jesus's message, Christians have to talk to sinners. Don't worry if other people think less of you for being with sinners. What matters is the reward God will give you for saving his lost sheep.
God bless you.
