Jesus's teachings - The Law

Matthew 5:17-20 (KJV)

Fulfilment of the Law

5:17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.

5:18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.

5:19 Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

5:20 For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.

Jesus didn't come to destroy the law, but to fulfil the law. Jesus also fulfilled the prophecies which pointed to the Messiah. Back in those days, the Pharisees were telling people how to live, piling many laws onto people. The Pharisees believed that they would get approval from God by obeying all of the laws in the Old Testament to the letter. They forgot the spirit of the law, which is to love God and love other people, and to to do to other people what you would like other people to do to you. That is what God wants you to do.
